The Bishop’s Close Garden at Elk Rock

11800 S.W. Military Lane, Portland

Possibly the oldest, private estate garden in the Pacific Northwest. Started in 1893 by Peter Kerr who lived there until his death in 1957. On a difficult 13-acre site (thin soil, limited sunshine), it was initially used for recreation (golf, tennis) by its bachelor residents, as well as a smallholding with vegetables, fruit trees and animals. Later a private family refuge.

Colored photos taken by Eileen Fitzsimmons; Black and White photos were taken by Peter Kerr/ Kerr photo Collection at Oregon Historical Society.

Date Established: May, 1893

How Many Acres: Originally almost 13; now 9
