Hoyt Arboretum, within Portland Parks and Recreation’s Washington Park, offers year-round access to 12 miles of trails, 189 wooded acres, and more than 2,300 species of plants and trees. The Visitor Center hosts a gift shop and herbarium. Our global tree collection includes nationally recognized Magnolia, Maple and Conifer collections, as well as 67 endangered or rare species.

Date Established: 1928

How Many Acres: 189

Must See Highlights: Our trail system is a favorite of visitors and locals alike. In June, some of the the top highlights from each of our nationally-recognized Magnolia, Maple, and Conifer collections include:

• Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides); the dawn redwood is a deciduous conifer and the official state fossil of Oregon. Find it near the intersection of the Wildwood and Spruce trails, where we’re proud to host the first dawn redwood to produce viable seed cones in North America in 5 million years. While you are there, continue on to the Wildwood trail and experience our Redwood Observation Deck.

• June is a great time to come see the summer-blooming Southern Magnolias (Magnolia grandiflora), which produce creamy flowers up to a foot in diameter. Find it on our Magnolia trail.

• Laceleaf Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Ornatum’) won’t be its trademark crimson-red color yet in June; still, its lacy, bronze-colored leaves are still a sight to behold in summer. Find it on our Maple trail along with over 60 species of Maples.
